Center on Law, Equality, and Race Scholarship Program
The UCI School of Law places a strong emphasis on social justice issues, with a focus on promoting racial justice. UCI Law’s Center on Law, Equality and Race (CLEAR) was created to promote greater racial equality through research, education, and advocacy. Its efforts include hosting speakers and symposia, and organizing regular law school events, including a faculty-student reading group and film nights. Since the fall of 2018, CLEAR has offered opportunities for financial support to students interested in pursuing careers related to racial justice. Select law students who demonstrate an exceptional interest in racial justice and who are likely to dedicate their legal careers to working in this area may be designated as CLEAR Scholars.
CLEAR Scholars at UCI Law are provided with the following benefits:
- Scholarship Award— Center Scholars are awarded an increase of $10,000 on their current UCI Law Scholarship. Please note: Total scholarship awarded by UCI Law cannot exceed actually billed and assessed tuition and fees. Enrolled students who are eligible for and receive any University of California approved waivers, will have their Center Scholarship adjusted accordingly.
- Mentoring—CLEAR Scholars will be assigned to a UCI Law faculty member who will serve as a mentor.
- Networking Opportunities—Scholars will be invited to participate in gatherings with CLEAR faculty advisors, outside scholars, and professionals whose work focuses on racial justice.
CLEAR Scholars at UCI Law are expected to do the following:
- Remain in Good Academic Standing—A Scholar must maintain good academic standing at the end of each year in order to remain eligible for future tuition and fees funding.
- Participate in Activities—A Scholar is expected to participate actively in CLEAR-sponsored events both at the law school and within the campus community, and to serve as an advisor to the faculty on student-oriented programming.
