Leading Tax Scholar and Teacher Victor Fleischer Joins UCI Law Faculty
IRVINE, Calif. – March 12, 2018 - UCI Law is pleased to announce the appointment of renowned tax expert Victor Fleischer to its faculty as professor of law. Fleischer joins UCI Law from University of San Diego School of Law, where he currently is a professor of tax law and director of tax programs.

“Professor Fleischer’s renowned scholarship and intellectual rigor is a tremendous addition to the academic community at UCI,” said Enrique Lavernia, provost and executive vice chancellor of UC Irvine. “His appointment to the UCI Law faculty further solidifies the university’s commitment to fostering excellence in teaching, learning and research, particularly within our graduate-level programs.”
Fleischer teaches and writes in the areas of corporate tax, international tax, partnership tax, tax policy, and alternative investments. He served as the Democratic Chief Tax Counsel for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee from 2016-17. Prior to joining the USD School of Law faculty in 2013, Fleischer held tenured or visiting professorships at University of Colorado Law School, University of Illinois College of Law, UCLA School of Law, Georgetown University Law Center and NYU School of Law. Before his accomplished career in academia, he practiced law at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and clerked in both the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Ninth Circuit.
Fleischer was the seventh most-cited tax law professor among U.S. law schools from 2009 to 2013 per Brian Leiter’s Scholarly Impact Study. His recent publications have appeared in the Vanderbilt Law Review, UCLA Law Review, Texas Law Review and NYU Law Review, among others. He received a B.A. from Columbia College and a J.D. from Columbia Law School.
Fleischer will begin at UCI Law on July 1, 2018. Fleischer is the second tax expert to join UCI Law this academic year; in November, UCI Law announced the appointment of Josh Blank from New York University School of Law.
