IRVINE, Calif. (Feb. 7  2023) — UCI Law first-year student Melanie McCorkle was appointed by Irvine Vice Mayor Tammy Kim to the city's Child Care Committee. The Child Care Committee is an advisory body of the City of Irvine, reporting to the Community Services Commission, providing input on the needs of the community pertaining to child care related issues. The Committee’s mission is to develop recommendations related to the availability of affordable quality child care and early education in Irvine.

The Committee works collaboratively with city departments and community organizations to enhance the provision of child care and early education services, providing outreach, and serving as a liaison to the community by informally sharing information learned at meetings, promoting city events for families and early childhood educators and sharing questions, concerns and ideas from the community with the committee.

Prior to attending law school, McCorkle received a B.S. in Society and Evironment at UC Berkeley, and worked for several years as a full-time childcare provider in Irvine.

“I am passionate about improving access to affordable childcare for families in our community, and am proud to serve the city of Irvine,” said Melanie McCorkle. “I also hope to use my time on the committee to support the city's childcare providers, focusing on public access to child development resources and labor rights information for domestic workers and service providers working with Irvine's families.”
