IRVINE, Calif., March 2, 2016 — UCI Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky will receive The Hon. Francisco P. Briseño Lifetime Achievement Award at the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association’s 38th Scholarship Fundraiser & Installation Dinner on March 5.

“Dean Chemerinsky’s long and tireless dedication to the progression of the legal community embodies the purpose and intent behind our Lifetime Achievement Award,” said OCHBA President Lyo Figueroa. “His jurisprudential influence in legal education will remain a legacy for generations to come. We are proud to recognize Dean Chemerinsky with this award and are grateful for his continuing efforts to champion justice and equality for all.”

The award is named in honor of Judge Briseño, the longest-serving judge in Orange County at the time of his retirement in 2014.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award from the Hispanic Bar Association and hardly feel deserving of such recognition,” Chemerinsky said. “The Hispanic Bar Association does tremendously important work in Orange County and throughout the country. Receiving this award from them is very, very special to me.”

Chemerinsky is the founding Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, with a joint appointment in Political Science. He is the author of eight books, including “The Case Against the Supreme Court” published in 2014, and more than 200 articles in top law reviews. In January 2014, National Jurist magazine named Chemerinsky as the most influential person in legal education in the United States.

A renowned expert in constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights and civil liberties, and appellate litigation, Chemerinsky frequently argues appellate cases before the nation’s highest courts, including the United States Supreme Court. He also serves as a commentator on legal issues for national and local media, and writes columns for the Orange County Register, the ABA Journal and the Daily Journal, as well as frequent op-eds in newspapers across the country. In December 2015, the OC Register recognized Chemerinsky as one of the 100 Most Influential in Orange County.

Prior to joining UCI, Chemerinsky taught at Duke Law School for four years and at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law for 21 years. Chemerinsky has also taught at UCLA School of Law and DePaul University College of Law. He holds a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.
