UCI Law Students Argue Ninth Circuit Appeal
IRVINE, Calif. (April 19, 2023) — The University of California, Irvine School of Law (UCI Law) Ninth Circuit Appellate Litigation Clinic provides students with an exceptional experience learning how to be effective advocates representing real clients in appeals before the Ninth Circuit.
Third-year students Roy Bendavid and Nicole Tackabery researched, briefed and argued a recent case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in a complex immigration/asylum appeal, Alexandre v. Garland, under the supervision of Clinic Co-Director Peter Afrasiabi and against the United States Attorney General. Watch law students Tackabery and Bendavid skillfully present their oral argument before the active three-judge panel in this recording of the case.
"Doing an oral argument in front of the Ninth Circuit was a surreal experience,” said Roy Bendavid. “I am very grateful for Peter and Nicole for all the help along the way and I can feel very proud about the work we put in to defend our client."
“Appearing before the Ninth Circuit has been one of my favorite law school experiences,” said Nicole Tackabery. “I am grateful for the opportunity to learn how to be an effective oral advocate and to implement those skills, and I am so proud of the work we were able to do advocating on behalf of Mr. Alexandre. Thank you to Roy for being an excellent co-counsel and to Peter for going above and beyond as our supervisor to ensure that we were prepared.”
