Richard Helms
Background:
Richard Helms is Lead Appellate Court Attorney for Presiding Justice Kathleen E. O’Leary at the California Court of Appeal. In 2000, Mr. Helms graduated cum laude from Western State University College of Law after completing the part-time evening program. He was Editor-in-Chief of its Law Review. He served as a judicial extern to Senior Judge Warren J. Ferguson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He holds Bachelor Degrees in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Redlands.
Mr. Helms was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2000. He is also a member of the bars in New York and the District of Columbia.
After law school, he clerked for then Associate Justice O’Leary. He practiced local government law at Woodruff, Spradlin & Smart.
Mr. Helms has a passion for education. He has volunteered at various literacy, tutoring, and civics programs throughout Orange County. He regularly assists Justice O’Leary with her educational programs to the bench and bar.
