UCI Law Hosts MLK Jr. Teach-In & Training Event
More than 150 UC Irvine School of Law faculty, staff, students, alumni, and attorneys came together at UCI Law on Saturday, Jan. 14, to discuss the potential effects of a new presidential administration on a variety of legal practices.
The event began with an opening plenary featuring:
- Pablo Alvarado, Founder and Executive Director, National Day Laborer Organization
- Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of UCI Law
- Jacqueline Dan, Staff Attorney, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-OC
- Kaaryn Gustafson, Professor of Law and Co-Director, Center on Law, Equality and Race, UCI Law
- Ameena Mirza Qazi, Executive Director, National Lawyers Guild Los Angeles;
- Angelo Logan, Co-founder, East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice.
The plenary was followed by breakout sessions featuring more than a dozen UCI Law professors and attorneys who discussed potential changes to the law under a Trump administration and ways in which to mobilize for justice. Breakout sessions were devoted to the areas of:
- Civil and Reproductive Rights, featuring Profs. Michele Goodwin, Alison Mikkor, Henry Weinstein
- Criminal Justice, featuring Profs. Mario Barnes, Song Richardson, and Katharine Tinto, and 2Ls and leaders of the Clean Slate Clinic, Andrea Levenson and Rochelle Rotea.
- Education Law, featuring Prof. Jonathan Glater, Alisa Hartz '12
- Employment and Labor Law, featuring Profs. Rachel Croskery-Roberts, Catherine Fisk, Stephen Lee; Julio Perez, Executive Director, Orange County Labor Federation, and Sebastian Sanchez, Staff Attorney, Bet Tzedek
- Environmental Law, featuring Profs. Alex Camacho, Seth Davis, Joseph DiMento, Michael Robinson-Dorn, and Jean Su '12.
- Immigration Law, featuring Gabriel Arellano, Esperanza Immigrant Rights; Profs. Sameer Ashar, Jennifer Chacón, and Annie Lai. Training was provided to attorneys wishing to provide pro bono legal representation to individuals detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in their bond hearings.
