VIII. Academic Probation and Disqualification

A 2.5 cumulative grade point average is required in order to receive a J.D. degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Law.

Academic Probation

The Assistant Dean for Student Services shall place any student who has a cumulative grade point average of less than 2.5 at the end of his or her first year at the School of Law or at the end of any semester thereafter, or who receives two grades of U and/or F at any time, on academic probation. The Assistant Dean for Student Services shall not have discretion in making this determination except pursuant to Section XII.A of these Rules.

If a student on academic probation does not have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher after an additional semester, the Assistant Dean for Student Services shall academically dismiss the student from the School of Law. The Assistant Dean for Student Services may extend this time period for good cause for one additional semester.

Academic Dismissal

The Assistant Dean for Student Services shall academically dismiss from the School of Law any student who receives three grades of U and/or F while enrolled in the J.D. program. The Assistant Dean for Student Services shall not have discretion in making this determination except pursuant to Section XII.A of these Rules.

Appeal from Academic Dismissal

A student who has been academically dismissed may submit an appeal within 10 days of receiving notice of dismissal based on one or both of the following bases: (1) procedural error in the process that materially affected the outcome (e.g., the transcript on which the dismissal was based was not accurate), or (2) application of non-academic criteria. (see FN 1 below) The appeal should identify the basis/bases, provide facts and explain how the error or application of non-academic criteria improperly resulted in dismissal. The student should submit the appeal to academic-appeal@law.uci.edu.

A panel of three law school professionals (the Assistant Dean/COO, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence and either the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs or the Vice Dean) shall consider the appeal and communicate its decision to grant or deny the appeal to the student and to the Registrar within 30 days. The decision of the appeal panel is final.

FN 1 The appeal panel shall refer any complaint relating to discrimination on the basis of any protected status by law or UC Policy to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (“OEOD”), and the appeal will be held in abeyance until OEOD has completed its investigation, if any. OEOD shall report its findings to the appeal panel.
